Our Native American Fire-Making Kit includes the following items:

  • Fire Board (Hearth Board) made from Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) or Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana).
    • Sourced from rough-cut lumber and dead elderberry trees.
  • Tinder Bundles from Fremont Cottonwood (Populus fremontii).
    • Made from the shredded inner bark of cottonwood, gathered from large, downed trees. The bark is removed, shredded and bagged.
  • Fire stick (Drill) crafted from either California Buckeye (Aesculus californica), Mule Fat (Baccharis salicifolia) or Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana).
    • Pruned in the field, then stripped of bark, sanded smooth, heated to remove natural bends, and finally tested in hearth boards to ensure they produce smoke and can make fire. Since natural materials may warp over time, you can straighten a drill by gently heating the curved section with a hair dryer and bending it opposite the curve.

To make a fire just like Native Americans have done for hundreds of years, simply rotate the fire stick in the hole on the cedar fire board until you develop a pile of dust that smolders. Then feed in some of the tinder bundle and gently blow until a flame appears.  If you get really good at this, you can start a fire within 2-5 minutes! Fire-making with a hand drill takes patience and practice. The key is to maintain constant downward pressure while spinning the drill without letting the tip slip out of the hearth hole.

As with any hand crafted item, each kit is unique and may look slightly different from the one pictured.  Can be used 2-3 times with the material provided, but you will need to obtain more tinder when you run out.

NOTE: This product creates a real fire!  As with any flame, adult supervision and extreme caution are required.
