Just as you throw away your chicken bones, owls "throw away" the remains of their meals by coughing up a pellet containing the bones and fur of their prey. Barn Owl pellets can be studied to learn about an owl's diet, habitat and food chain.

Owl pellets have been carefully sterilized to ensure safety.  Owl Pellet dissection is a terrific activity conducted in thousands of classrooms each year.  If you have never done a dissection of owl pellets previously, you will be surprised at how much your students will engage as they discover the contents of their owl pellet.

Nature-Watch carries 2 sizes of owl pellets:

Standard Size owl pellets range in size from about 1.5" to 2.0".

LARGE owl pellets range in size from 2" to 4" and larger!  (The average size of our LARGE pellets is about 3 inches.)  LARGE pellets are richer in material - they contain more bones.  For this reason, some instructors prefer to have 2 children work as a team to dissect a single LARGE pellet.
