Feared for all the wrong reasons (rabies, aggression,\nand of course vampires) the truth is that bats are a vital part of the\necosystem on nearly every continent on earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Considering that many bat populations are now under threat from a variety of sources, from trap and disposal extermination to being &#8220;blinded&#8221; by noise pollution and environmental disturbances, it\u2019s important that we educate children on the importance of bats, and why we should care for these winged creatures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Nana-nana-nana-nana&nbsp;BAT FACTS!<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The majority of bats are insectivores<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature-watch.com\/bat-skull-replica-p-899.html?cPath=160_162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nature-watch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Bat-Skull-Replica.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-337\" width=\"139\" height=\"120\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly 70% of the world&#8217;s 1,200+ bat species\u00a0exclusively eat insects, and that&#8217;s an incredible benefit for everyone else.\u00a0 Bats are estimated to save our farmers billions of dollars per year\u00a0in pest control, as well as eating a lot of insects like mosquitos which are known to transmit disease. All one has to do is look at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature-watch.com\/bat-skull-replica-p-899.html?cPath=160_162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">bat&#8217;s skull (replica)<\/a> to see how its teeth were evolved from eating tiny things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bats are important pollinators<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature-watch.com\/the-life-cycle-of-a-bat-book-p-1433.html?cPath=160_162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nature-watch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Life-Cycle-of-a-Bat.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-338\" width=\"143\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nature-watch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Life-Cycle-of-a-Bat.png 388w, https:\/\/www.nature-watch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Life-Cycle-of-a-Bat-266x300.png 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While 70% eat insects, the other 30% of bats are almost entirely fruitarian &#8211; that is, they only eat fruit or nectar.\u00a0 (Yes, vampire bats exist, but there are only\u00a0three\u00a0species of vampire bats in the entire world.)\u00a0 \u00a0In the meantime, all those fruit-eating bats are extremely important in spreading pollen from the plants they feed on. (Now does that sound like a menacing beast to you?)
