People have been fascinated by the sun for thousands of years! The sun is the center of our solar system and is the driving force of life on Earth. We rely on the sun for light, heat, food, water, energy and more. Historically, many cultures even worshipped the sun!
Our Here Comes the Sun Activity Kit provides all of the materials you need for each participant to assemble and hang their very own suncatcher. First, each child selects pressed flowers from a beautiful assortment that we provide. Next, place the flowers between 2 crystal clear 4" plastic squares and wrap a shiny piece of foil tape around the edges. Finally, attach a piece of hemp string and hang the suncatcher in a window using the included suction cups. When the sun shines in the window, this beautiful craft will be a reminder of the things they learned about the sun!
Everything you need to assemble the craft as well as a detailed Instructor's Guide to help you deliver the educational information is included. Our Here Comes the Sun-Catcher Activity Kit is a perfect example of how we make learning about nature and science so much fun!
Great for children ages 7 and up. (Younger kids will need a little help with the foil tape!)
General: National Science Education Standard NS.K-4.4 Earth and Space Science, NS.K-4.2 Physical Science and NS.5-8.3 Life Science.
Content Standard D: Objects in the Sky (K-4)
The sun, moon, stars, clouds, birds and airplanes all have properties, locations, and movements that can be observed and described.
Content Standard D: Changes in the Earth and Sky (K-4)
Objects in the sky have patterns of movement.
Content Standard B: Light, Heat, Electricity, and Magnetism (K-4)
Light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object.
Content Standard C: The Characteristics of Organisms (K-4)
For Ecosystems, the major source of energy is sunlight. Energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis. That energy then passes from organism to organism in food webs.
Specific (California standards):
(5.5c) Students know the path of a planet around the Sun is due to the gravitational attraction between the Sun and the planet.
(8.4b) Students know that the Sun is one of many stars in the Milky Way galaxy and the stars may differ in size, temperature, and color.
(5.5b) Students know the solar system includes the planet Earth, the Moon, the Sun, seven other planets and their satellites, and smaller objects, such as asteroids and comets.
(6.5a) Students know energy enters ecosystems and moves through the food chain.
