Gardening is an incredible, hands-on way for children to learn. So much more than simply digging, planting and weeding - a school garden is an outdoor classroom through which science and nature concepts come alive. Students learn about topics including: germination, water cycle, pollination, life cycle, photosynthesis - just to name a few - by working in and around a school garden.
Garden of Learning includes 6 CDs with materials to help you initiate, implement and sustain a successful school garden program:
The Garden System - how to organize, start and maintain your school garden program. Includes support documents for kicking off your program. It maps out what you have to do, step by step. And it answers the hard questions, like how to decide which classes get to plant where, how the scheduling needs to work, the materials you will need and where to get them, etc.
The Garden Curriculum (Year 1) - K-6 curriculum that includes a school year’s worth of lessons presented in the sequence of a typical school year. Many of the lessons are academic: science, math, history, language arts, environmental science, nutrition, agriculture and fine arts. Grade level worksheets are included and require students to: write, calculate, record observations, collect data and use a microscope. Other lessons are more labor oriented: getting the jobs of a real organic garden done! 4 CDs are included for this section and are divided into grade levels: K-1, 2-3, 4-5, and 6+.

Garden of Learning was the first-ever winner of the California School Garden Network "School Garden of the Year Award". A panel of representatives from agriculture education organizations selected the winning school garden.
